A little about Ken, by his daughter Jo, founder of The Crafty Kit Company
Dad was born in Milngavie, Glasgow, in 1936 but grew up in East Lothian. He was educated at the Knox Institute in Haddington, North Berwick Primary, and George Watsons School for Boys in Edinburgh. He studied architecture at Edinburgh College of Art from 1955 to 1960, during the tenure of William (Willie) Gillies and T. Elder Dickson as Principal and Vice Principal. During his studies, he won the Sloane Medallion and a scholarship to travel to Italy. An early talent for drawing led to his recognition for perspective drawings as an employed architect.
Dad married my mum, Sheila in 1960 and, in 1972, with five children to support (I'm second youngest!) he left salaried employment to become a self-employed artist. Between 1974 and 1979, mum and dad ran a coffee shop and gallery in Haddington, and in 1986 they opened a gallery and gift shop in The Square, East Linton.
Throughout his life, dad produced a vast array of greetings cards, limited edition prints, and pictorial maps. He loved painting the West Coast of Scotland, the fishing villages of Fife, and East Lothian. Influences on his work included Chinese and Japanese art, and artists such as Turner, Mactaggart, Rowland Hilder, and the Scottish Colourists, including Joan Eardley. He regularly exhibited his work across Scotland and was a beloved tutor to many art groups.
Dad was a much-loved and gifted watercolour artist, known for his philosophy of "less is more." He is missed by family, friends and colleagues but I'm delighted to be able to honour his legacy by bringing his amazing artwork to you here.
