How to make crochet strawberries!

It wouldn't be summer without strawberries! As we approach the height of the British strawberry season (and the Wimbledon Championships), why not create your own version of this vibrant red fruit in Amigurumi crochet?

If you’re new to crochet, you might find it helpful to read our beginner’s guide to crochet. It has step-by-step guides to many of the crochet stitches you’ll be using to make your strawberries, which you could practise before you begin. In it you'll also be using slip stitch - learn how below!

What you'll need

- 3.5mm crochet hook

How to crochet with slip stitch

Assuming you already have one stitch on your hook, insert the hook into the place that you want to make the slip stitch, pick up the yarn at the back and bring the hook through both stitches on the hook. Slip stitch is a great way to make joins without adding any extra height.

How to make the fruit

With red wool, make 6dc into a MC.

Round 1: (1dc into the next dc, 2dc into the next dc) rep around (9 sts).

Round 2: dc around (9 sts).

Round 3: (dc in the next 2 dc, 2dc in the next dc) rep around (12 sts).

Round 4: (dc in the next 3 dc, 2dc in the next dc) rep around (15 sts).

Round 5: (dc in the next 4 dc, 2dc in the next dc) rep around (18 sts).

Round 6: (dc in the next 5 dc, 2dc in the next dc) rep around (21 sts).

Round 7: (dc in the next 6 dc, 2dc in the next dc) rep around (24 sts).

Round 8: dc around (24 sts).

Round 9: (dc in the next 3 dc, 2dc in the next dc) rep around (30 sts).

Round 10 - 11: dc around (30 sts).

Round 12: (dc in the next dc, dc2tog) rep around (20 sts).

Round 13: dc2tog around (10 sts), then stuff the strawberry.

Round 14: dc2tog around (5 sts).

Break the yarn, thread the end onto the wool needle. Weave the yarn through the last 5 sts and pull tight to close the hole. Stitch securely, weave in end and snip yarn.
